There's a persistent belief that espresso is the "strongest" coffee in terms of caffeine, and drip coffee is comparatively mild. It's an understandable assumption — espresso certainly tastes more concentrated — but it doesn't hold up well once you look at what actually drives total caffeine in a cup.
Caffeine is easy to extract, almost regardless of method
Caffeine is a small, highly water-soluble molecule, and it extracts from ground coffee quickly and efficiently across nearly every home brewing method used within normal contact times. Whether you're pulling a 25-second espresso shot or steeping a French press for four minutes, the water picks up the large majority of the available caffeine well within that window. This is different from many flavor compounds, which extract more gradually and are far more sensitive to grind size, water temperature, and time. The practical consequence is that total caffeine in your cup tracks the mass of dry coffee you used far more closely than it tracks the brewing method itself.
Why a small shot and a big mug can be similar
A double espresso shot uses a relatively small volume of liquid but a meaningful dose of coffee — commonly around 18 grams for a double. A large drip mug might use a similar or even smaller mass of coffee (often around 10–15 grams per cup depending on strength) spread across far more water. Because caffeine tracks the dry-coffee mass rather than the liquid volume, an intensely flavored, concentrated shot and a mild-tasting, diluted mug can land in a broadly comparable caffeine range, even though one "tastes" dramatically stronger than the other. Why the number should always be a range, not a point
Caffeine content in the raw bean genuinely varies, and by a meaningful amount. Arabica beans typically run lower in caffeine, commonly cited around 1.1–1.5% of dry weight, while robusta beans run notably higher, sometimes over 2%. Origin, growing conditions, and even the specific harvest shift this further. Roast level has a smaller but real effect too. Given all that variability, presenting a single precise number — "this cup contains exactly 94mg of caffeine" — implies far more precision than the underlying biology actually supports. Does dark roast really have less caffeine?
There's a popular belief that dark roasts are lower in caffeine than light roasts, and it's only partly true, in a way that depends entirely on how you measure. Roasting does burn off a small amount of caffeine, so bean-for-bean, a dark roast has marginally less than a light roast of the same origin. But roasting also causes beans to lose mass and expand in volume, so if you measure coffee by scoops or by volume rather than by weight, a scoop of dark roast (larger, lighter beans) actually contains fewer beans-worth of coffee than the same scoop of light roast. Weigh your dose on a scale, as this site's calculators all assume, and the roast-level difference in caffeine becomes small enough that it rarely matters in practice.
