Everything this site's Caffeine Estimate Calculator does can be written as one multiplication: dose in grams, times a milligrams-per-gram figure, gives an estimate, and the same multiplication at 20% above and below that figure gives a range. That's the whole model, start to finish, with nothing else feeding into it. It's worth stating this plainly, because caffeine content sometimes gets discussed as though it's more mysterious than it is — it isn't. It's dose arithmetic, with an honestly wide range attached because the input figure is an average, not a measurement of your specific beans.
The multiplication, in full
The calculator's default figure is about 10mg of caffeine per gram of dry coffee, a commonly cited average across roasted coffee generally. Multiply your dose by that figure and you get a central estimate; multiply by 8 (20% below 10) and 12 (20% above 10) and you get the low and high ends of the range. A worked running total across a day
Because the model is pure multiplication, it's also purely additive across multiple cups — you can sum doses first and multiply once, or multiply each dose and sum the results, and get the identical answer either way. Take a realistic day: a 12g drip cup in the morning (120mg, range 96–144mg), a 15g pour-over mid-morning (150mg, range 120–180mg), and an 18g double espresso in the afternoon (180mg, range 144–216mg). Add the doses first — 12 + 15 + 18 = 45g — and multiply once: 45 × 10 = 450mg, with a range of 360–540mg. Or add the three individual estimates: 120 + 150 + 180 = 450mg, and the two low figures and two high figures sum the same way, to 360 and 540 respectively. Both paths land on exactly the same number, because there's no interaction effect between cups in this model — it's dose in, milligrams out, every time, and totals are just addition. A lighter day works the same way in the other direction: a single 12g pour-over and nothing else totals 120mg, range 96–144mg, with no further arithmetic needed because there's only one cup to add.

Where the 10mg/g figure itself comes from
It's worth being transparent about the constant, not just the multiplication. Roasted arabica coffee, the more commonly used species in most retail coffee, is commonly cited in the neighborhood of 1.1–1.5% caffeine by dry weight — which, converted to the same units this calculator uses, works out to roughly 11–15mg of caffeine per gram of dry coffee. Robusta beans run meaningfully higher, sometimes over 2% (roughly 20mg/g or more). The calculator's 10mg/g default sits slightly below even the low end of that arabica range, which is a deliberately conservative starting point rather than a midpoint average — a design choice that trades a small amount of accuracy on the low side for less risk of understating the estimate on beans that run richer than expected. Why this model isn't built for decaf
One explicit boundary worth stating: this arithmetic is calibrated for regular roasted coffee, not decaffeinated coffee. Decaffeination processes remove the large majority of a bean's caffeine before roasting, but not literally all of it — decaf coffee still contains a small residual amount per gram, just far below the 10mg/g figure this calculator defaults to. Running a decaf dose through the default multiplication would substantially overstate its actual caffeine content, because the constant itself assumes regular, non-decaffeinated beans. If you're specifically estimating a decaf brew, the calculator's custom mg-per-gram field is the right tool for adjusting the constant down accordingly, rather than trusting the regular-coffee default on a decaffeinated dose.
Where the arithmetic ends and something else begins
This is the point where it's worth being direct about what this page is, and isn't, telling you. Commonly cited general public guidance — the kind of figure found in general dietary guidance, not specific to this site or this calculator — puts a reasonable caffeine intake at around 400mg per day for most healthy adults, with lower guidance commonly cited during pregnancy. That figure varies by individual, by health status, and by the specific guidance body or jurisdiction you're looking at, and it is not a number this calculator or this site is qualified to apply to you personally. Why this site won't build a "daily tracker" around that number
It might seem like a natural next feature: let people log cups throughout the day and compare a running total against a limit. This site deliberately doesn't build that, and it's worth explaining why rather than just leaving the feature absent. A running personal tracker implies a personal recommendation is being made — that some number is "your" safe amount, tracked against real-time intake — and that's precisely the territory of individualized health guidance this page just pointed at a doctor instead of a website. The plain multiplication above is a stopping point on purpose: it answers "how much is probably in this" and deliberately doesn't try to answer "is that fine for me today," because that second question depends on things — your health history, medications, individual sensitivity, pregnancy status — that a dose calculator has no way to know and shouldn't pretend to.
What actually changes the honest answer
